Executive Summary

“By equipping students with the skills to offer peer-to-peer support, CAPS will enhance mental health, increase resource availability, and promote a culture of wellness and safety.”

The Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) at IU Indianapolis is excited to propose a new mental health peer support program designed to enhance students’ mental health and create a more supportive campus environment. This innovative program will empower students with the skills and knowledge to provide effective peer-to-peer support, fostering a culture of acceptance, accessibility, and wellness. The primary goal of the program is to improve the overall mental well-being of students. By providing peer support, students can share their experiences and challenges in a safe and understanding environment, which can significantly reduce feelings of isolation and stress. The program aims to foster an accepting atmosphere where students feel comfortable discussing mental health issues. This openness can help break down the stigma associated with mental health, encouraging more students to seek help when needed. By training students to offer peer support, the program will make mental health resources more accessible. Peer supporters can provide immediate assistance and guide their peers to professional resources when necessary. The program will encourage a culture of wellness and safety on campus. By promoting healthy coping strategies and resilience, the program aims to reduce the incidence of mental health crises and enhance overall student safety.

CAPS is dedicated to providing high-quality psychological services to the community while serving as a training ground for future psychologists. The center offers a comprehensive range of services, including individual therapy, group therapy, and psychological assessments, all grounded in evidence-based practices. CAPS is committed to making mental health services accessible and affordable for all students, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to receive the support they need. The demand for mental health services is increasing, and CAPS is well-positioned to address this need through its comprehensive range of services. The new peer support program aligns with CAPS’ mission and commitment to evidence-based practices. By leveraging the power of peer support, CAPS can extend its reach and impact, providing timely and effective support to a larger number of students. CAPS will collaborate with other campus organizations, such as student clubs, residence halls, and academic departments, to promote the program and integrate it into the broader campus community. This collaboration will help create a network of support that extends beyond the program itself. Emphasizing compassion and support, the program will ensure that every student feels heard and valued. Peer supporters will be trained to approach each interaction with empathy and understanding, creating a safe space for students to share their experiences.
